John Coleman was born in Kirkintilloch, Scotland in 1948. His parents, James and Catherine were both Artists and School Teachers, which is how they met. In 1971 he graduated from Strathclyde School of Architecture with a Masters degree in Architecture. Following graduation he ran the Research Unit at Dundee School of Architecture before taking up a post as Senior Housing Architect with East Kilbride and Stonehouse Development Corporation, to learn to be an Architect.
In 1977 he set up his own Practice in Strathaven, a village south east of Glasgow. Two years later he was joined by Peter Ballantine to form Coleman Ballantine Partnership. A move to a basement office in Woodside Crescent in 1980 set the Partnership on the road to success. It became an Award Winning International Partnership within a few more years.
1988 and again in 1990 he participated in an advertising campaign for whisky, the first British Architect to be featured in a ‘Dewars Whisky Profile’ campaign.
He was a founder member of the Scottish Society of Architect Artists. As an Artist he has exhibited in Galleries across Europe and his work is in private collections. He has also designed several series of Stamps which feature in the Summer Isles Collection.
As a writer he has had a number of short stories published. “From the Shallows of Corruption” is his first novel. Now retired and living in Spain, drawing, painting and getting older day by day.
Membership of the Society is open to all registered architects, past and present students of architecture and those who have worked in architecture, planning and landscape in Scotland. Annual membership is currently only £20.
